Sometime in the late-1980s, Julio Bermejo-then bartending at his family’s San Francisco-based Mexican restaurant, Tommy’s-had the genius idea to use agave syrup as the sweetener in their house margarita. Pour the honey syrup into a clean glass jar or airtight container. Shake vigorously for 15–30 seconds, or until the solution is viscous and homogenous. To make honey syrup, combine 2 parts honey to 1 part warm filtered water, preferably by weight, in a cocktail shaker. If a recipe calls for straight honey, you can loosen it with a few drops of hot water without throwing off the dilution too much. Just be sure to let the mixture cool before using. Why hot water? “I like to warm filtered water in my electric kettle for honey syrup, just because it can make the mixing a little bit easier, especially if you’re dealing with honey that has crystallized a bit," says Epi Editorial Director Maggie Hoffman. Honey is too viscous to integrate into cocktails straight from the bear-shaped squeeze bottle mixing it with hot water makes it easier to work with. “If you do a little digging at your local co-op or farmers market, you may find honey made by bees that focus their pollination over a specific type of tree or grove,” says King, who leans toward dandelion honey, which is very aromatic. In many recipes, honey syrup can take the place of sugar syrups for interesting twists on old standards. Store the simple syrup in a clean glass jar, squeeze bottle with a cap, or other airtight container, in the refrigerator, for 1–2 weeks.īest in: Ti’ Punch, Daiquiri, Old Cuban, Caipirinha, Queen’s Park Swizzle Use a clean spoon to taste to make sure the syrup isn't grainy. Seal and shake vigorously for 1–2 minutes, or blend until sugar dissolves fully (timing will depend on the speed of your blender). You can also adjust the ratio to 2:1 to make rich cane simple syrup. To make cane sugar simple syrup, combine a 1:1 ratio of cane sugar to cold or room-temperature filtered water, preferably by weight, in a cocktail shaker, mason jar, or blender. A blender speeds up the process (and requires less elbow grease). To make simple syrup with a bag or box of cane sugar, we recommend using a blender cane sugar crystals are larger than granulated ones and might take longer to dissolve. Says King: “There is no substitute for the rich complexity of this sticky sweet goodness, and it may be my favorite syrup with which to mix.” Some bartenders, however, will go so far as to boil down raw sugar cane juice into a syrup, which offers a pungent, grassy flavor. A cane or turbinado syrup adds more complexity to a drink than mere simple syrup, though it remains less flavorful and bold than the others below. Turbinado is a form of cane sugar, spun in a turbine (hence the name) to evaporate the juice and dry out the crystals (Sugar in the Raw is a popular brand). Only slightly less processed than granulated or white sugar, cane sugar has a bit more texture, color, and flavor than its refined counterpart. Everything else-fruit juices, ice, those little umbrella garnishes-is nice, but alcohol and sugar will always remain the base for pretty much any cocktail. You could argue that besides booze, a sugar syrup is what inherently makes a cocktail a cocktail, adding texture, balance, and drinkability. More on that in a minute, but first, the basics: What is simple syrup? Below, we'll break down the pros and cons of each, illustrate variations like rich simple syrup and honey syrup, and leave you with our go-to simple syrup recipe, an easy base you can adjust with flavorings as you please. But the basic mixture of sugar and water is also up to plenty of other tasks, like soaking cake layers or sweetening iced coffee.Īs you might guess-“simple” is in the name, after all-simple syrup is remarkably easy to make, but there are a few different techniques. On the other hand, simple syrup, a critical component for making cocktails, is arguably the easiest thing one can prepare in the kitchen. Sure, there's no-bake cheesecake and quick bread, but those necessitate a shopping list of ingredients and a bit of prep time. But simple syrup puts it right out front. Few recipes literally spell out how easy they are to make. Depending on the stage of the company, equity can be highly variable, and can have a huge impact on total compensation. Tech jobs promise equity, which means a share of the company. An annual bonus is a percentage of your base salary that can be affected by a few factors: level of seniority, employee performance, and company performance. They typically require that you stay with the company for a fixed amount of time. Signing bonuses are a one-time lump sum given at the beginning of a new job. There are two types of bonuses: a sign-on bonus and an annual bonus. Startups typically offer higher base salaries since their equity grants may not yet count as real cash. The base salary is a fixed amount that won’t be affected by the performance of the company or the employee. It’s no secret that tech salaries are high-but the compensation itself can be broken down into several parts. They take on higher responsibilities within the organization, such as managing multiple PM teams, multiple product lines, and representing the company externally. Group PMs usually move up the management ladder to director roles. They are tasked with the hardest parts of product strategy and have a thorough understanding of their particular business and product. Principal PMs are the highest level on the individual contributor track. Senior PMs progress towards Principal PMs, while Group PMs often rise to Director roles and beyond. Senior PMs are the highest level of individual contributors, and group PMs directly manage other PMs. Here the PM career path diverges into two paths: IC and management. PMs are in charge of launching features and coordinating product roadmaps. But there are more and more companies that are open to new graduates such as Microsoft, Spotify, and Adobe. Most companies look for applicants with a few years of industry experience in a related role, such as software engineering or business development. APM programs last for a few years and typically lead to a PM role. They’re held by big companies: think Google, Uber, Lyft, and Salesforce.Īs an APM, you help more experienced product managers. Associate product manager (APM)Īssociate Product Manager programs are structured programs organized by big tech companies for early-career applicants. The exact titles can vary, but the career ladder for PMs typically follow this pattern: APM, PM, Senior PM, Group/Principal PM, Director, Senior Director/VP of PM. PMs also have the potential to move up very high in the career ladder, all the way from entry level to director! To understand how this all works, let’s review the career ladder of a PM. It’s a job with a lot of responsibility, and the pay reflects that-at big tech companies, entry-level jobs start at 100k a year. Product managers create, develop, and launch new products in their company. What is a product manager's career path? (Top) Let’s dive into what your salary would look like as you progress as a PM, and what factors go into your total compensation. So how do we figure out which numbers are accurate? At the same time, the product management role is relatively new, which means that salaries can range drastically. While the first military flight took place at Selfridge on July 8, 1917, the first aerial refueling aircraft, a KC-97 Stratofreighter, was not assigned to the base until January 1959. Army Air Service aviators accomplished the first aerial refueling on June 27, 1923, on a flight between Los Angeles and San Diego. "The support we receive from our community is second to none, and this series of flyovers provides us an opportunity to say ‘Thank you’ to our neighbors while also demonstrating an important part of the Air Force mission. Rolf Mammen, 127th Wing commander, in a statement prior to the flyover. “Our citizen-airmen are proud to serve as Michigan’s Hometown Air Force," said Brig. Other flyovers happened around the nation to mark the centennial. Other locations along the air route included Alpena, the Mackinac Bridge, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, downtown Grand Rapids The route started in Port Huron and was supposed to end at the Selfridge base in Harrion Township. The low humming of an aircraft could be heard over the Detroit River around 12:50 p.m., but there were no visible signs of the tanker and A-10s.Īirmen from the 127th Wing based at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, with about 1,700 military and civilian personnel, were scheduled to fly in formation from 10 a.m. "At least it's not pouring rain," said Rachel Paulson, 49, of St. "Once again Michigan weather gets in the way," he said. This would have been Lockyer's first time seeing a flyover in the city, if it weren't for the low visibility. High temperatures to end the week won't get out of the teens and overnight lows Friday night will plummet to -1 with a windchill of -15 degrees."It was very stealthy," said Marshall Lockyer, 22, of Beverly Hills, who cracked the joke just after 12:30 p.m., when the aircraft were supposed to be visible in Detroit. Schools will absolutely close through pretty much the entire area. Will schools close from the snow in Southeast Michigan? Near the Ohio border, we're looking at more than a foot while Ohio and Indiana should each get more than 14 inches. It only gets deeper as you go farther south. Oakland County and Macomb County should mostly get between 8 and 12 inches of snow while Detroit, Wayne County, and Washtenaw County will allow likely get between 10 and 14 inches. Kalamazoo, Lansing, and Flint should all be in the 6 to 8 inch range. The broad range is between 8-14 inches, but a more targeted number of 10-12 inches looks likely for most of us with some of us getting even more. An additional 2-3 inches is still possible as most of the snow tracks out of Southeast Michigan by around 8 p.m. There are several Udemy courses with over 10,000 reviews and their pricing is incredible when compared to an intensive bootcamp. They have superior stain blocking abilities, and will keep any old stains from bleeding through to new paint. Oil-based primers are the best option for old walls. Plaster walls are more vulnerable to moisture than drywall, and require high-quality primers. What’s the best primer for plaster walls? Once the surface is roughly level, smooth the surface with high grit sandpapers to create a smooth surface for the primer coat. To do that, start by blending any patches or new plaster into the old plaster with rough grit sandpapers. The goal is to create a smooth, even surface with no visible cracks or holes. Larger holes from old bolts or longer cracks should be patched just like drywall and sanded. It remains flexible, so the crack will be less likely to reappear. Paintable caulk can be used to fill minor cracks. Plaster walls are unforgiving, and any cracks that are left alone will likely spread. This process can be tedious, but it’s one of the most important steps. Once you have the walls stripped down to bare plaster, you’ll need to repair and patch any cracks or old damage. Chemical Strippers – For paint that’s relatively intact.
"We had tried to predict every possible parliamentary maneuver, but of course, being Democrats and being liberal-minded people, we were thinking completely within the context of the constitutional and legal system," he said. I think that truth will prevail, and I think that Tommy had confidence that in democracy, you're not going to be able to fool all of the people, all of the time. "And I think he'd be looking on the bright side of how many people are cooperating with our investigation, how many people are coming forward to tell the truth about what happened and how many people really want to solidify the institutions of American democracy. Rachel Maddow reads an account of January 6th from 's new book, "Unthinkable," in which Congressman Raskin draws strength and courage from his son's memory. "I would do that and try to make some sense of what had happened." "I decided that I could either spend the rest of my life obsessed with this 50-day period in my life or I could try to record it for my daughters, for my family, for my constituents, for my friends, for my fellow countrymen and women," he added. Raskin said it had been a "tough year" and he was having difficulty sleeping "for a long time." And so I did feel him very much in my heart and in my chest through that entire period." He was asking a lot more of democracy, not less. He added: "Tommy was in a second year at Harvard Law School, when we lost him and he was deeply engaged in movements for human rights, against war, for animal rights and welfare, and to defend and expand democracy.
